Nikon Z

My post is so late I know, but better late than never.

On 23 August 2018, Nikon officially announced their new Z mirrorless system. I’ll leave the commentary for later and will just list the announcements.

Nikon has announced two models to head the Z system release including a Z6 and Z7. The press release for the two cameras and Z system can be found here.

Accompanying the two cameras are three lenses including a kit zoom and two f/1.8 primes:

  • Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S

  • Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S

  • Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S

In addition, there is the development announcement of the flagship lens of the new S-line Nikkor Z’s.

  • Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 Noct

And finally, there is the announcement of an F-mount adapter for adapting Nikon’s existing F-mount lenses.

  • Mount Adapter FTZ

Surprisingly, Nikon has also give us a lens roadmap which the company has never done in the past.

We’re going to need a plumber in here..

Leaks, leaks and more leaks.

Ahead of the official announcement press release photos of the new mirrorless Z6 and Z7 cameras have been leaked, first at Nokishita and then another set appeared at Digicame-info.

We also see images of three lenses and an adapter as part of the initial release which includes:

  • Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S
  • Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S
  • Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S
  • FTZ Adapter

As expected, Nikonrumors is all over it with additional info regarding specifications. Head on over to check out all the commotion.

With just an hour and a half to go til the actual announcement, I wonder whether there’re any secrets left to reveal.

Nikon news this week

Earlier this week on 7 August 2018, Nikon released their first quarter financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2019.

And today Nikon released a third teaser video for their upcoming mirrorless camera entitled Body.

Not much can be gained from this latest teaser video with the mirrorless body appearing only once at the end of the video revealing very little extra detail.

Another teaser pic also appeared on Nikon’s twitter feeds:

More leaks

As we await the next official teaser video which should occur on Wednesday, there has been an image leak involving an apparent photoshoot of Chinese Uyghur actress Dilraba Dilmurat 迪丽热巴.

As usual, the photos can be seen at Nikonrumors.

This leak reveals the top controls showing a top  in the corner dial, LCD and several buttons behind the shutter release reminiscent of the current D5/D850 generation layout.

Again head on over to Nikonrumors for the break down.

Teaser 2 Roundup

As expected, the second teaser video generated a lot of discussion after revealing the general outline of the camera and mount.

This Nikonrumors post has probably the best sets of comparison images to gain an insight on the camera and mount dimensions. So head on over there for the lively discussions.

Measurement estimates still vary widely with the inner mount diameter ranging anywhere from 49mm to >60mm. A reminder that the first rumour for the “Z-mount” was for a “49mm external diameter” (but I think they meant inner mount diameter) but a subsequent set of rumours mentioned 55mm. From the measurements in the teaser video, it looks like 55mm may be closer to the mark.

This has spawned a large number of posts questioning whether the mount is large enough for medium format. Bear in mind Nikon has already officially stated the new system will be for FX so even if the mount may be large enough, we won’t likely (if ever) be seeing it any time soon.
